Buddhists recite sutras and pray for merit before releasing the fish. After the release the fish are again caught by fishermen and sold to fishmongers who in turn sell them to the releasers. A perfect cycle is thus formed. The title So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish Comes from the fourth part of Douglas Adams' novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a collection of works that present the calm, gentle sea rivers of Tianjin and its fishermen and swimmers. Born and raised in China, Wang Tianxi studied in the United States, where he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology. He then returned to China to live and work and founded The Miscellaneous LAB, a small video studio in Tianjin, which provides various services including residencies for artists. Focusing on small metaphorical landscapes in everyday environments, Wang Tianxi's work is influenced by the likes of Masao Yamamoto, Masahisa Fukase, Gregory Halpern and Todd Hido.
