As humans, we control our world by giving meaning to nature and producing unnatural products. Photography addresses the misconception that the world is subject to the imposition of meaning. While the camera is an unnatural apparatus, photography is perfection, and it is this perfection that gives photography its natural qualities. According to Hiroto Toyama, photography is in fact the resistance of the natural to the unnatural, an exploration of how nature can be controlled through photography itself.
"Perhaps because I was born and raised in Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan, I have always been very sensitive to things made by humans. As I grew older, this sensitivity grew stronger. Things made by humans are 'unnatural', in which people's feelings are limited and their meaning is selfishly misinterpreted."
