The future is broken tells the story of my fears for the future of our planet. To create a dialogue with the viewer about the true state of the land we love, I superimposed climate science data onto landscapes with personal meaning. Turning to a process of laser etching, CNC milling and LED light mapping has allowed me to see what is usually hidden from ordinary view and to open up a conversation about what exactly is at stake for us as individuals in the Anthropocene era.
Sometimes beautiful, sometimes broken, the spaces in the photographs are filled with personal connections that underpin the often shocking and abstract nature of global climate change statistics. By activating the spaces with light during long exposures, I have left my own traces in the images, providing a subtle visual trace of my connection to these landscapes and my attention to them. Together, these photographs reflect a truth that the camera alone cannot reveal and ask us to consider whether the memories that connect us to nature are enough to allow us to take collective action.
