Pseudo night explores the representation and sublimation of walking in the landscape. The images of the trails at night are a constructed reflection of my experience of long distance hiking. I photographed the trails in this way to reflect the brief moments of meditation that occur during long distance hikes. Although I photographed during the day, this effect is intended to mimic the night. This approach references old western films that used to produce night scenes during the day. The photographs frolic with the traditional troupe in imagery, as if the characters behind them exist through absence, both inviting, yet warning people to go to the edge of the forest.
Meg Roussos is an artist who has completed the three largest long-distance hiking trails in the United States, accumulating over 8,000 miles of hiking. Roussos explores conversations about what it means to experience the landscape first-hand. Her artistic practice is nurtured by personal experiences in the wilderness. She works in a variety of fields, allowing her ideas to take the form of traditional images, photographic artist books, land art documentation or video.
