Black waves is a series that combines expressionism and metaphor to explore the dark depths of grief.
The series is based on the true story of a friend of mine whose 19 year old daughter Eva committed suicide while on holiday in France with her boyfriend in 2012. I received seven grief-filled diaries from Eva's mother and the series is my interpretation of these seven diaries from a personal perspective.
In this project, I use nature as a poetic tool to tell personal stories. I imagine scenes of harsh yet unacknowledged mourning, thus visualising the nature of grief and loss. I added some negative text to the story, trying to use it to express her strong desire to reverse the harsh truth.
The title 'Black waves' refers to Eva's negative emotions that lead to irreversible suicide, but also to the immense grief her death leaves the family. As Haruki Murakami writes: "Memories beat your heart and warm you, but they also tear you apart". Grief comes in bursts, a sudden fear that weakens, blinds and renders life meaningless.
