In the series I show details of the natural world, gathered from my garden, children's books and antique identification guides. Each photograph is an observation of the natural world, as if it exists only for our observation. Nature's little beauties, such as birds, butterflies, branches and petals, become objects of observation, arranged in a structure of layers.
The use of this large format 8x10" camera brings these photographs to life superbly. The large glass on the back of the camera, which is imaged prior to exposure, provided me with great inspiration. The screen maps my interest in the early history of photography, especially when used as a tool to study nature. You can imagine a time, just before the dawn of photography, when the landscape of nature shifted on the camera screen. Through an optical device, nature is transformed by a tiny spectacle into a smaller and more intimate landscape. This 21st century work reflects a more ambivalent experience of the natural world.
