I started making a video record of the Liucitang Alley in Lishui in 2012, and ancestral worship is naturally an integral part of the process. In Liu Ancestral Hall Back, which is only 150 metres long and has less than 100 families, there are 25 families that have kept the tradition of ancestor worship intact. During the Ching Ming Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival (the half of the seventh month), the Winter Solstice and New Year's Eve, these families purchase good food, carefully cook and prepare wine, tea and even cigarettes; set up offering tables and incense burners, and in some cases, offer ancestral statues and tablets in the upper hall of their homes. A person elected by the parents or the family officiates at the ceremony and completes the ancestral ritual through the four steps of receiving the ancestors ---- for the ancestors ---- offering - sending them off.
However, with the development of the times, the younger generation's concept of ancestor worship has gradually become weaker. This year, on New Year's Eve, five families in the Liucitang Alley gave up the ancestral ritual altogether either because the elderly had passed away or because their children were unwilling to "take over" because of their old age and frailty.
